Lightning Sequence

  • Houdini Mesh Generation

Using Houdini to create a procedurally generated fractured surface to apply a force to.

  • Houini Mesh Destruction

Using the fractured mesh to carry out a simulation procedurally

  • Custom BP Tools

Creating custom BP tools to accommodate this sequence

In this series of VFX Sequences, this was the first one, highlighting the use of animations, Niagara and procedural content.

BP Lightning Tool

This sequence frequently features the charging of lightning into the character’s hands. To improve efficiency and save time, I developed a simple Blueprint tool that uses two points of a Niagara Beam to generate a lightning arc.

Base Animation

By utilizing Mixamo’s library of animations, I combined several animations into a cohesive sequence that served as the foundation for the project

Lightning Material

This video shows how the different elements connect, showing the Blueprint tool in action during the charging animation plays. Additionally, I used a simple emissive panning noise across the character’s material to enhance the feeling of electricity build-up

To intensify this, I used Niagara particles in the character’s hands to depcit the absorption of lightning and add sparks.

Houdini Sword & Destruction

Leveraging this sequence to learn Houdini, I utilized the lightning node to distort the mesh inside of Houdini. Adjusting these values created a suitable weapon for this sequence.

Furthermore, I used Houdini’s RBD material fracture function and applied a force along the procedurally generated plane to create the simulation which is seen at the end of the sequence.

Floor Material

To finalize the sequence, I needed a material to enhance the simulation. I used Substance Designer to create a rocky lava-like texture with an emissive mask, producing the dynamic red glow at the end of the sequence.

Combining all these elements, along with some thoughtful camera work, resulted in my first VFX sequence. While my latest work showcases significantly higher quality, this project marks the beginning of my journey.
